Students who are D/deaf or hard of hearing may need specific support to access the curriculum on the same basis as their hearing peers.
Based at Lalor Park Public School is the Blacktown Itinerant Support Teacher Hearing (ISTH) team which supports schools in the Bungarribee, Quakers Hill and The Ponds Networks.
It comprises of 12 staff and is one of six teams in the Metropolitan South and West School Performance Directorate, engaging support for students who are D/deaf or hard of hearing.
Assistant Principal Hearing
Assistant Principals Hearing support schools to meet the personalised learning and support of students who are D/deaf or hard of hearing. This includes:
- participating in assessments by working collaboratively with parents and carers and students, the school learning and support team, and other professionals as required
- providing professional learning to school and Itinerant Support Teachers Hearing
- coordinating a team of Itinerant Support Teachers Hearing
Itinerant Support Teacher Hearing
Itinerant Support Teachers Hearing assist and support schools through the learning and support team. They can provide advice on reasonable adjustments for children with a confirmed hearing loss from the age of diagnosis through to Year 12, who have met the requirements for support. Adjustments address the teaching and learning needs of the student in their classroom and school environment.
These adjustments are directly associated with hearing loss and:
- respect the student's choice
- recognise the child's ability and access needs
- respond to access needs by providing high quality learning.
Itinerant Support Teachers Hearing work in a multi-disciplinary team with students, parents and carers, school learning and support teams and other professionals. They may carry out student assessments, take part in review meetings, support school staff in making teaching and learning adjustments and provide professional learning for school staff.
