High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

In every Lalor Park Public School classroom, teachers are trained to identify and nurture high potential across all learning domains. We ensure that excelling students are constantly challenged through:

  • Curriculum Differentiation: Providing high-order questioning, complex texts, and open-ended research tasks during daily lessons.
  • Flexible Grouping: Allowing high potential students to work together on challenging tasks that extend their current level of understanding.
  • Growth Mindset Focus: Encouraging every student to take risks, reflect critically, and strive for continuous improvement and deep learning.
Across our school

We offer targeted, rigorous programs to cater for high potential students across academic, creative, and practical domains. Our specific groups meet weekly to focus on self-directed, project-based learning and solving complex real-world problems.

  • Think Tank (Kindergarten to Year 2): This group focuses on developing strong foundational skills in critical thinking, logic, communication and problem-solving through engaging, hands-on tasks.
  • STEAM Team (Years 3 to 6): This group applies skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics to work through long-term, self-directed projects that require collaboration and innovation.
  • Intra-School Competitions: We are constantly exploring opportunities for our students to participate in school-based events and competitions in areas such as debating, public speaking, S.T.E.M.
  • Student leadership roles through the student representative council and peer mentoring.
  • Sporting for netball and soccer competing in interschool competitions.
  • Representative pathways in a variety of sports.
Across NSW

High potential students at LPPS have access to opportunities across the public education system, allowing them to collaborate with peers from other schools.

  • External Competitions: Encouraging participation in state and national competitions.
  • Enrichment Programs: Promoting enrolment in Department of Education programs for students seeking further extension in specific fields.
  • System Workshops: Connecting students with specialised workshops and external providers to explore diverse talents and areas of interest.
